Is there a tie between abortion and mental health issues? The question has been hotly debated in the media, in politics, and within the abortion industry for decades. The answer to the question can be found in the studies done by mental health professionals.

The National Institute of Health (NIH) concluded women with a history of abortion do experience “elevated rates of mental illness” compared to women who haven’t had an abortion.

In fact, according to the Task Force on Mental Health and Abortion (TFMHA), “some [women] experience clinically significant disorders, including depression and anxiety.”

Clearly, there is a connection between the negative effects abortion has on a woman’s mental health.

A Woman’s Mental Health

According to the Mayo Clinic, women are almost twice as likely to experience depression as men. Do you wonder why?

In another study by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), it was discovered that one of the primary reasons women experience more depression is because of the hormonal changes they go through. NIH stated that depression occurs more often “during puberty, prior to menstruation, following pregnancy, and at perimenopause.”

Not only hormonal changes, but stress, an inherited trait, specific life experiences, and brain chemistry can also be factors for depression.

Why Abortion?

The question remains, “Why does abortion trigger mental health problems?” For many women, having an abortion is a serious and traumatic experience. So traumatic, that some women experience Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) says “Women are significantly more likely to experience PTSD than men.” Traumatic events such as physical or sexual abuse, rape, natural disasters, or witnessing the effects of a horrible or violent event can trigger PTSD in women.

Symptoms for Post-Abortion Trauma

Although a feeling of relief initially follows an abortion, many women then begin to feel other symptoms such as:

  • Specific or generalized sense of grief and loss
  • Guilt/shame
  • Secrecy
  • Anxiety or depression
  • Persistent sadness or feeling hopeless
  • Changes in eating habits or weight
  • Excessive worry or fear
  • Rapid or extreme mood swings
